How do probiotics maintain healthy immune function?
The normal colonisation of the lining of the digestive tract by good bacteria is critical to maintaining normal gut immune function. • Stimulating the production of antigen presenting cells, which trigger an immune response and regulating T cell and B cell activity. T cells help stimulate B ells which make antibodies.
• Secreting metabolites known as short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) which contribute to normal immune response by recruiting and maturing immune cells.
• Increasing the production of proteins, and therefore influence the gut lining, and subsequently the health and function of both the gastrointestinal tract and immune system.
